How to paint a metal roof

New metal roofs are available in unpainted metal, or with a pre-coated factory finish. Any metal roof that has undergone routine maintenance with special attention to fasteners, seams and a protective paint finish in most cases can be expected to last 100 years or more. The paints that are factory applied during manufacturing eventually lost mil thickness and their protective capacities at which point restoration of the metal roof must take place. When this inevitable condition occurs, the application of Calbar Metal Roof Paint is required. Coatings used for maintenance and aftermarket applications must posses similar attributes to paints and coatings applied during the metal-manufacturing process. The coatings must be able to protect the metal surfaces from the elements, such as UV radiation, rain, snow, ice, pollution, salt spray and other airborne contaminants. The purpose of painting a tin or metal roof is to prevent metal-surface degradation such as rust or corrosion as well as to give the roof an aesthetically pleasing decorative finish.

SHOWER-PROOF "WB" is a waterborne acrylic, elastomeric roof paint for use on all metal roofing without a primer. It is a faster drying, longer lasting, easier to apply alternative to oil-based coatings for metal roofing. SHOWER-PROOF "WB" is a premium quality, water- proof decorative coating for use on all common metal roofing and rain-carrying products. Prior to the application of Calbar Metal Roof Paint, all required repairs should be completed. Damaged areas may be repaired using Calbar Roof Seal (CRS). (Please refer to our website www.pennvalleypaint.com for more information on this product.) Initial repairs to the metal roof should be made at fasteners, seams and laps. Calbar Roof Seal and mesh fabric (Calfab) are available for repairs in these areas of the metal roof. Fasteners, seams and laps are initially waterproof but begin to loose this seal over time. Seams and laps can be made watertight with a combination of fabric, such as Calfab, applied with Calbar Roof Seal before repairs to the metal roof are completed. Surface to be coated must be clean and free of water, oil rust, dust, dirt, mildew, soldering fluxes, tree sap, or any foreign matter that can potentially interfere with adhesion. Surface preparation for the painting of previously coated Terne metal roofing: Power-wash with Tri Sodium Phosphate (TSP) to remove "chalk", dirt, rust, and loose paint. Rinse thoroughly and let dry completely. Alternately, hand scrape peeling sections with a wood or plastic scraper (the sharp end of a cedar shake works well). Clean rust areas with a stiff bristle brush- a wire brush or metal scraper could damage the tin. Then pour a heavy-duty solution of TSP in warm water on roof and scrub with a stiff bristled brush or floor broom. Rinse thoroughly and let dry completely. If rust is present on the metal roof after cleaning, spot prime rusted areas with Calbar red oxide primer 10-520. If no rust is showing, apply two coats of SHOWER-PROOF "WB". Paint only when weather conditions are warm and dry. Apply only at temperatures from 40 degrees to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (air and surface). Do not paint if rain is forecast within the tack-free time. Starting after 10am and stopping by 4pm gives best results. Condensation on wet paint film will flatten the finish of the coating prematurely and unevenly, but does not affect adhesion or durability. Never paint over condensation on the metal roof. Painting at temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit will cause all coatings to dry too quickly, resulting in poor adhesion and flexibility. Re-coating too quickly can delay thorough drying and cause bubbling and wrinkling.
